In this video, photographer @SophiaWallace talks about her project, “On Beauty” and how it raises questions around ideas about masculinity, femininity, gender, misogyny, and what it means to be viewed as a “man”.
It’s very interesting to hear her talk about the intentions behind her work as well as the process that went into creating the images.
Check it out.
Soooo I’m about done with the cultural reductionism that prompts people who aren’t Muslim to make grand artistic statements by posing someone else who isn’t Muslim in a hijab.
(I am making an assumption about the male model here photographed, but not, I think, a shocking one—this isn’t what the photographer is considering in her work)
And that image doesn’t seem to me to align well with her focus on norms of female representation in advertising and glossy mags—though if she were talking about norms of female representation more broadly, and considering the way that a Western, non-Muslim gaze encounters a subject who is wearing a hijab, I might (!might!) find this particular image less problematic.
That addressed, I’m pretty into the premise of the work as described by the artist, and the other images, here.
